Spelling Bee

On January 16, the Gant auditorium hosted our 10th annual official Scripps School Spelling Bee.

Eighteen third through fifth graders participated after winning their class bees, and all of them did a great job.

After 36 rounds of spelling, a third grader won for the second year in a row! Donovan C. took home the trophy and will represent Minnie Gant at the LA County Regional Bee in March. Many thanks to our volunteers for their help, congratulations to Donovan, and congratulations to all of our brilliant gator spellers!

Toy Drive and VA Hospital Visit

This past December Mrs. Fanton, Mrs. Fisher, and 12 members of the student council embarked on a field trip of giving.  First stop: deliver over 130 toys to a department of LBUSD responsible for overseeing the wellbeing of 5,000 homeless students in the district.  The students filled bins, carts and boxes of toys, sporting Santa hats and holiday wear to warm anyone’s heart. Once inside the facility, the staff expressed utter elation with Minnie Gant’s generous gifts.  A staff member even took the time to explain how homeless students are identified in the district and how the toys would be distributed, a process that maintains strict anonymity and utter sensitivity to the student’s feelings.  Without a doubt, the Gant Student Council members learned a valuable lesson and went home feeling a lot more appreciative of their own blessings than they did before.

Next stop:  VA Hospital Spinal Injury Center in Long Beach.  With handfuls of handmade cards, each card a unique creation, the students entered the building to spread holiday cheer to our military heroes.  Veterans in the entryway, halls, and in the elevators received the students with smiles and holiday wishes in return. Most memorable were the carols the students sang for the veterans who reside in the center.  One veteran was inspired to hum along and “conduct” the singing, and another complemented their “angelic harmony”. With such positive responses, one cannot disagree; the students’ mission of holiday cheer was accomplished.

Thank you, Mrs. Fanton, Mrs. Fisher, and Student Council, for representing Gant for two worthy causes.  Thank you to all who donated toys and created cards!

Run Club

If you're around campus before school on Tuesdays & Fridays, or after school on Thursdays, you may have noticed the students running, the adults cheering, and Bruce Springstein's voice belting that "baby, we were born to run..." That's right, Run Club is back to Gant and this time, it's a yearlong program! Gant PTA has provided scan-cards for every student at our school, and three days a week, we are out on the back playground scanning laps for students who want to get some exercise, be with their friends and earn prizes by meeting their goals. In the first three weeks that the program has been "running" ;) 235 students have been out to participate and they have already run nearly 400 miles collectively. They are INCREDIBLE. This year features a super cool new Run Club tee, designed by second grade parent Mark Michaylira, that can be purchased for $10 to benefit Run Club, as well as a "50 mile" tee for students who reach the goal of 50 miles earned this year. "Toe Tags" and "Brooks" brand swag are also earned at various milage achievements along the way...If you or your student would like to join in the fun, check out the Run Club info. on the website, or email programs@gant-pta.com with your questions. We would love to see you out there!
