Our Friday, June 3, Talent Show at Millikan High School was a huge success! Congrats to all of the participants and backstage crew on a job well done.

Book Fair

A HUGE thank you to all our Gant families for making our June book fair a success!

School Play

Congrats to our 50 students who performed in the Jungle Book at St. Cornelius May 13 and 14 on a job well done! The show was a huge success and was organized by Yaya's Performance Academy.

Run Club - Parent Day

Parent Run Day on Friday, May 6, was a huge success! It was fantastic to see parents out there with their kids. We had a ton of parents and caregivers running laps with our students, and the parents alone ran a total of 165 laps (or 20.625 miles). Way to go!

Gators Give Back

One of the last in-person activities Gant students completed just before the 2020 lockdown was Gators Give Back.  At that time, travel sanitizer bottles were scarce, but somehow, we came through to fill hygiene bags and to prepare sandwiches for those less fortunate.

The 2022 comeback: donations trickled in—with plenty of sanitizer bottles—and students of all grade levels came May 2 and 3 to assemble over 125 hygiene bags and over 220 ham and cheese sandwiches! The enthusiasm in the room while the students completed their charity project spoke volumes of their desire to do good in the community and to be with each other in doing so. Yes, the spirit of charity is strong in the Gant community! Thank you to the families who donated items as well as the parents who joined us for the hands-on work!

The hygiene bags and sandwiches were given to the Long Beach Rescue Mission, an organization that provides approximately 900 meals a week and other basic necessities to those in need.  Awesome work, Gators!

Inspiration 52

We welcomed the Inspiration 52 character education program back to Gant this March. Jerome Carter worked with our 5th grade boys on life skills that will benefit them in middle school and beyond. The program culminated in a tour of the Loyola Marymount campus in May.

Thank you so much to everyone that came out to our Spring Carnival on April 30! We hope that everyone had a great time and that fun was had by all. The PTA was so excited to have a fun, free event for our community after almost two whole years without one! Attendance was fantastic, now we know to do it bigger and better next year because our Gant community is ready for it! A HUGE thank you to all of the volunteers that made the day run smoothly. And if you see Mr. Eric around campus, please thank him for being there all day on a Saturday to open doors and keep our campus clean.

Spelling Bee

Congrats to our very own Donovan C., who placed 14th out of all third- to eighth-graders in LA County schools at the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee on March 13.Donovan, from Mrs. Heck’s class, represented Gant after winning the school spelling bee on February 17, which featured 17 of Gant's top spellers.

We are so proud of Donovan and all our Gant spellers on a job well done!

Family Movie Night

Thank you to everyone who came out for our movie night on March 11. The attendance was amazing! It was so great to see so many families in person again.

Hopefully it will be the first of many fun events at Minnie Gant. Thank you to Kelly Shanedling who organized the entire event and made sure everyone got some popcorn, glowsticks and Airheads!

Also thank you to the Acosta Family who generously donated their outdoor movie equipment, and Tony Delacruz who helped set up the sound system and improved it even as the movie was playing.

What a fun night. Have questions, comments or suggestions? Please email me (Adrienne Gomer) at:

Our Gant Gators were having so much fun that we have several items that were left behind.  We also have a family that is missing chairs and a backpack. If you are missing anything or accidentally came home with any extra items please email  Thank you!

Hula Hoop Assembly

So much fun on March 11!!! Our first real assembly in two years!!! Every kid got to hula hoop and also learned about eating healthy, exercising, and being kind.

Looks like some of our teachers and staff may have got a workout, too ...

With 365 Veteran cards, 246 pairs of socks, and 219 toys, our Minnie Gant Gators and their families have proven how giving they are!  When the truck load of dolls, Legos, balls, and more pulled up, the representatives at Bethune were overwhelmed by the generosity and confirmed that the toys were to be given to homeless children in our own LBUSD for the holidays.  At the Tibor Rubin VA Hospital, the nurse at the Spinal Cord Injury Center who was sent down to pick up Gant’s donation of cards and socks had to make THREE trips to gather everything.  She expressed how thrilled the veterans would be to receive handmade heartfelt cards and warm socks—in some cases, fuzzy too!  Way to go Gant Gators!  You did it again!

Congratulations to Mrs. Lahera’s class for rounding up the most toys, and to Mrs. Coster’s and Ms. Moss’ classes, which tied for second place!

Our Halloween festivities were a huge success!

Students and staff had so much fun dressing up. We started the morning with our Student of the Month assembly, and Trunk or Treat was a blast! Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the event!

Retirement Garden Ribbon Cutting

The ribbon cutting ceremony for Gant's Teacher Retirement Garden was a success! Retired teachers Mrs. Arakawa, Mrs. Muha, Mrs. Ball, Mrs. Mueller, and Mrs. Cantor were honored at the October 13 event.

The garden, originally started by Mrs. Ball's 2008 class, was refurbished under the leadership of Jamie K., a Gant alumni and current Ambassador Girl Scout working on her Gold Award Project.

"I ... decided for my project to give back to my elementary school and refurbish it into an outdoor learning environment that honored retired teachers," reports Jamie. "The garden's design contains grade-level plants that meet their science standards along with curriculum and books for the teachers to use with their lessons. A garden club, with students, was created that would help with the project. Now it is sustainable, so that future Gant students can learn while enjoying, managing and caring for the garden."

2020 Class Gift Unveiling

Thank you, Class of 2020! Yes, 2020. The pandemic didn't stop you, only slowed you all down. A huge shout out for all the color and fun you've added to our playground.

On Tuesday, June 15, Minnie Gant hosted a walk-through promotion event for all 5th graders. After a very nontraditional academic year, we were thrilled that students were able to enjoy an in-person outdoor event to celebrate their accomplishment. Students and parents were also able to take festive pictures with Mrs. Fanton and their teacher.  We are so very thankful for all of the nontraditional activities we were able to undertake during the year to celebrate our graduating class.  Students received small gifts on their porch, were able to remotely paint a tile, and received 2021 lawn signs to highlight their promotion milestone. Thank you to Mrs. Fanton, the Gant PTA, teachers and parents for all of the support for our 5th grade families.

School Nurses Day

Wednesday, May 12 was National School Nurses Day, and we recognized our own amazing nurse, Ana Speedone. During the 2020-2021 school year, she led Gant through this pandemic, focusing on safety for all. She trained other nurses across the district, presented at staff meetings, and was on call even during off-hours. A huge shout out to Ana from the entire Gant community!

On Friday, May 7, we celebrated the folks who have shown up every day in the past year to serve our students and parents. Thank you for making Gant a better place to learn and grow!

Nurse of the Year Celebration

Congratulations to our very own Nurse Ana, who was named LBUSD’s Nurse of the Year on June 9. Staff celebrated her last Friday by wearing scrubs to school, and our school website featured her front and center in our Staff Spotlight column. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing nurse!!!!

Teacher Appreciation Week

May 3 to May 7, online and in-person families united to celebrate our cherished, hard-working teachers. We showered them with cards, flowers, pies, box lunches from Rascals Teriyaki, and other goodies.

We hope that our teachers left the week feeling super appreciated!

PTA Reflections District Competition

Our Minnie Gant family has a new star!

We are proud to announce that Sydney R.-N., after taking first place in the visual arts intermediate category at Minnie Gant, also took first place at the council level, and then first place at the district level.

Her artwork, All The Possibility, moved on to the state level. Sydney represented Minnie Gant and our entire district in the State of California.

We are all so proud of Sydney!

Bethune Toy Drive

Many thanks to the Gant community! We collected more than 300 items to donate to LBUSD students and their families for the holidays.

The Bethune Transitional Center and the families who received our gifts expressed heartfelt appreciation for our support. After receiving their toys (as well as backpacks, uniforms, school supplies, gloves, beanies, a resource guide for housing assistance, and toiletries from the Center), one family summed up their joy with this charming thank-you picture.

You've made a difference, Gators, and allowed many to have happier holidays!

Way to go, Gant Gators!!! Look at all that food we collected for the Long Beach Rescue Mission and Lutheran Social Services food bank. Thank you to the Millikan Compass Capstone kids for picking it and making the delivery.

Veterans Day Tribute
Reflections Awards Night

On November 10, a virtual reception was held to honor all Gant students who submitted original works of art for the PTA Reflections Program! This year's theme was "I Matter Because ...", and despite this year's challenges, Gant received 25 fabulous submissions, showcased in these videos.

A big hand to all the talented students who participated! Artists who received first place at Gant will move on to district-wide competition. A special thank you to Ben Rolly for chairing this year's program and putting together the video showcases.

Pumpking Decorating Contest

Every pumpkin-decorating submission this year was a winner! We applaud your ghoulish creativity and ghastly humor, Gant Gators.
